The “Mourning Victory” figure was the centerpiece of the Melvin Memorial, commissioned by Boston businessman James Melvin, whose three brothers were killed in the Civil War. Installed in 1908 the memorial can be viewed at the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, in Concord, Massachusetts. In 1915 Daniel Chester French made another version which he presented to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York where it can be viewed in the American Wing Charles Engelhard Sculpture Court.
