Daniel Chester French was  inspired by a photograph of the Yellowstone geyser, Old Faithful, that appeared in National Geographic Magazine. The shape of the billowing steam suggested the composition. The working model is on display in the Chesterwood Studio, and plaster and bronze maquettes can be seen in the Chesterwood Barn Gallery. The final, full-size marble statue is in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
