President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated just after the end of the Civil War on April 14, 1865. Daniel Chester French was selected to create a statue of Lincoln for the memorial to the slain 16th President on the newly rehabilitated Mall in Washington, D. C. French studied biographies, photographs and portraits, as well as Lincoln’s life mask and hand casts to make his portrayal accurate.  Collaborating with architect Henry Bacon it took eight years to complete the Lincoln Memorial and it was dedicated on May 30, 1922.
