Full-scale plaster head of “Victory”, 1923, NT69.38.197

This on-line exhibition provides a partial photographic catalogue of Chesterwood's collection of Daniel Chester French's preliminary models that are related to his public art commissions. French completed more than one hundred public monuments and memorials across the United States and France. Maquettes, models, and finished works in Chesterwood’s collection relate to more than half of these commissions.

Catalogue entries include new photography of works in Chesterwood's collection, brief explanatory interpretations, and material from the Chesterwood Archives such as historical photographs of the works. Collections research is ongoing and additional objects will be added periodically. Also to be added are exhibition histories and excerpts from transcriptions of related Daniel Chester French correspondence.

New photography of works in Chesterwood's collection was funded by a generous grant from the Henry Moore Foundation. The cataloguing project was supported by the Historic Sites Fund of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Historical photographs are courtesy of the Chesterwood Archives, Chapin Library, Williams College, Gift of the National Trust for Historic Preservation / Chesterwood, A National Trust Historic Site, Stockbridge, Massachusetts.
