Family Celebration Oct 9: Fall into Chesterwood!

Chesterwood is pleased to present the final program of the season, “Fall into Chesterwood: A Fun Family Event,” on Monday, Oct. 9 from 1 to 5 p.m.  The event will be held rain or shine. Admission is free for children 12 and under; $5 for children 13 to 18; and a reduced fee of $10 for adults. “Friends of Chesterwood” receive free admission.

Pumpkin carving 15Activities will take place in a tent behind the Barn Gallery as well as other locations on the Chesterwood property. Along with admission to the historic studio (open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), the residence (open from 2 to 5 p.m.) and grounds, which feature woodland walks and formal perennial gardens, the event will feature music by Mamma’s Marmalade, a dance performance by Sayer Mansfield and Shawn Ahern (formerly of Pilobolus Dance Theater) at 2:30 p.m. sponsored by Berkshire Pulse, and a presentation about local songbirds by Arlene Kiesler at 3 p.m. Apple cider and cider donuts will be served, and visitors are encouraged to bring picnics to enjoy on the grounds.

The program will include a guided hike at 1:30 p.m. on Chesterwood’s historic Ledges Trail, newly restored this summer by a work crew from Greenagers, a local nonprofit that connects area youth with paid stewardship work. Elia Del Molino, Trails Supervisor for Greenagers, will lead the hike. guided hiked scheduled by Will Conklin, Director of Greenagers, will lead another hike at 4:00 p.m. Hiking boots or sturdy shoes are recommended. The restoration of Ledges Trail was supported by grants from the Housatonic Heritage Area, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the Marge and Joe Grills Fund of the National Trust for Historic Gardens and Landscapes.

Pumpkin carving 12Special activities for children and families will include pumpkin carving (while supplies last) and a self-guided scavenger hunt. The event will conclude with a late afternoon stroll along Chesterwood’s woodland walks, decorated with carved pumpkins lit with lights. Sponsors of “Fall into Chesterwood” include the Chesterwood Advisory Council, “Friends of Chesterwood,” Berkshire Pulse, and area businesses including the Donut Shoppe and Taft Farms.
