Daniel
Chester French:
Transforming a Nation Through Sculpture
On exhibit in the
Barn Gallery is a showcase of important works that evoke
the breadth and scope of French's career, as well as dramatize the scale
and proportion of these four core monuments:
- The Minute Man,
Concord, Massachusetts 1875
- The Continents,
United States
Custom House, New York, 1906
- Samuel F. Dupont
Memorial,
the fountain at Dupont Circle, Washington DC, 1921
- Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington, DC 1922
The exhibit explores
Daniel Chester French's creative process, his style and the social context
for his work.
The exhibition is
supported by resources that describe contemporary and historic public
sculpture and sculpture conservation. Visitors can use interactive programs,
gain online access to the National Inventory of American Sculpture, and
a video presentation about the sculptural process. Adjacent to the exhibition
is the Museum Shop, which offers reproductions of French's work, plus
a variety of gifts, stationery, toys and books.
